Hi, i got hold of an old jl cooper mcs2 jogshuttle using rs422/sony 9 pin. I tried connecting it to the rs422-port of my ultrastudio express and grab the incoming commands but nothing is happening. I know that rs422-setups usually work the other way around (sending vtr control commands from an nle to a deck) so i am wondering: is this actually a bidirectional connection? Like do i have any chances with this setup? And if yes, is there any software i could monitor the incoming commands with?
'serial tools' which can connect to the rs422 port of the ultrastudio but it do not show anything coming in, not even in raw mode. Thanks a lot for any help!! I've tried the same and from media express i was able to send commands to the hyper deck.
Strangely i was not able to receive commands from a vtr controller in media express. To monitor try requesting commands because if it sends with media express it should be sending with other tools. Snagit 9 Free Download Deutsch more. Minicom (linux) macwise (mac) putty (windows) you can use them for that purpose. And maybe you need to send a command first to receive something, I do think the commands have to be in binary with break lines, so you might have to paste some numbers with some lines as a command to request a response. Hey, firstly thanks a lot for your answers!
Especially since the bmd support is really non existent - which i as well asked two times about this but nothing. Again (and again, and again, it's a really simple question one might think): i know the connector of my jog shuttle is probably one way but what about the ultrastudio? IS THE 9-PIN RS422 CONNECTOR OF THE ULTRASTUDIO EXPRESS BI-DIRECTIONAL? CAN IT RECIEVE COMMANDS AS WELL? And if yes, does it work with standard sony pin out like eg. And yes, hello blackmagic, i would appreciate an official answer about this. Come on, it's two words.
For a company selling equipment to professionals your support is the worst, like really THE WORST i have ever seen. RS-422 on devices like Decklink, Shuttle, Avid etc are bidirectional. That's how the software can read the time code and other info from a deck. Other handshaking data is passed back to the software so things like editing to tape will stop if the deck passes an error code back to the software. RS-422 is used specifically because it is bidirectional and being a low data rate technology that uses balanced pairs allows lengths of I believe 3000 feet or more.
I used to know about the whole RS-422 Protocol very well but have kind of forgot about it. You may even be able to find some great articles on the web about the full Sony Protocol and it's command codes. Hello again, firstly, after bashing bmd support above i want to say, that now someone did get back to me (over the forum) who is really trying to trace what went wrong there! Regarding my problem: i googled what you told me - which led me to this thread: but this only got me more confused: now i know that for pinouts, i should rather look at the kipro documentation than at the one from bmd. But then again, that is for hyperdecks. If i stick to this info here (which at least two posters seem to agree on): is the (female) rs422-connector on my ultrastudio express a master or a slave port?!? To my understanding it should be a master (since it should control decks) but then again, if it's a master it should be male and not female.
